Ports Australia has spent a day on the water with U.S. Consul General Sharon Hudson-Dean touring Port Kembla.
The tour was joined by the Port Authority of NSW’ Head of Operations Port Kembla and South Coast, Peter Ernst, and NSW Ports’ General Manager Planning & Infrastructure, Peter Engelen.
Officers from the NSW Police Force Marine Area Command led the tour, graciously sharing their vessel and knowledge of the waterways.
The Consul General learnt about the operations of the port, how it directly serves the local area, and how it’s responsible for the state of NSW’ largest turnover in motor vehicles.
Ports Australia’s CEO, Mike Gallacher was on the tour and spoke afterwards about how important these relationships are to build a wider understanding of how ports work.
‘It’s important for us to show close partners like the Consul General first-hand the fascinating ways these trade gateways tick and there’s no better way to do that than get out on the water and see the port up close,’ Mike said.
‘Both Peter Ernst and Peter Engelen were kind to share their time and vast knowledge of ports with the Consul General.
‘The ability to turn to the port professionals who form our membership is one we don’t take for granted and one we’ll continue to use to strengthen relationships with important partners such as Sharon Hudson-Dean,’ Mike ended.
As NSW’s port of growth, Port Kembla operates 24/7 to handle the trade needs of NSW, handling 100 percent of NSW’s motor vehicle imports and the import/export of agriproducts, minerals and bulk and liquid bulk cargo. The Port delivers nearly $543 million in Gross Regional Product to the Illawarra (roughly $1,805 per person) and supports local jobs, with 99 percent of Port Kembla’s workforce residing within the Illawarra. Port Kembla is also approved by the NSW Government as the site for NSW’s next container terminal, once Port Botany nears capacity.
